Cleaning of the wall is recommended before removing the old mortar from the joints but not necessary, it is always up to the client as not everyone will like their brickwork or stonework facade perfectly clean.

Stone Repointing and Brickwork Repointing methods description

Flush – as the name indicate, this type of pointing fill the joints even/flush, with the brickwork or stonework.Tuck pointing – brickwork is pointed flush with the coloured lime mortar that match the color of the brick and then by applying very tin lines using lime putty on top of the colored pointing an impression of perfect cut brickwork is created. Tuck pointing finish is not flush.Wiggan – this pointing method is very similar to tuck method with only one difference that the lime putty is located inside the colored lime mortar makes it the finish flush.Both those methods, either tuck and wiggan should be applied to the brick wall with uneven structure, where the joints are quite wide or where the bricks are badly deteriorated.Wheatherstruck and strap pointing can be performed if requested.
